EMDR and trauma

How online EMDR therapy works.

EMDR is a structured therapy approach that may help the nervous system process distressing memories or experiences. Online EMDR can be explored when privacy, safety, preparation, and clinical suitability are in place.

Online EMDR begins with preparation.

EMDR does not usually start by going straight into the hardest memory. Early sessions often focus on history, goals, grounding, coping tools, and deciding whether EMDR is appropriate for the concerns you are bringing.

During processing, a therapist may guide brief sets of bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, tapping, or sound while you notice thoughts, emotions, images, or body sensations. The goal is not to erase memory. The goal is to help what has felt stuck feel less present-day controlling.

  • Preparation includes grounding, safety planning, and privacy checks.
  • Processing is paced and monitored by a trained clinician.
  • Sessions include time to settle before ending.
  • EMDR is not a do-it-yourself technique.

Online EMDR has to be planned carefully.

Online EMDR may not be appropriate for every person or every concern. A consultation can review privacy, safety, current symptoms, supports, and whether EMDR, trauma-informed therapy, or another path is appropriate.
